Plaza del Triunfo

Plaza del Triunfo
The Plaza del Triunfo is a square that is adjacent to the Cathedral and the Alcazar. There is a small monument  called the “templete” (also called Triunfo) with a Baroque style that has an image of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. This was constructed in 1757 to give thanks that no one died during the earthquake in Lisbon in 1757, although the Cathedral suffered some damage. This monument was created by Jose Tomas Zambrano.  The monument shows the Virgin Mary and Child. The image is also called the Virgen del Triunfo and the Virgen del Patrocinio.
The square was remodeled at the start of the 20th century by Juan Talavera Heredia.
There is another monument in the square that is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, constructed by Lorenzo Coullaut Valera in 1918. Every year it receives afloral offering on December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception. The monument has the sculptures of four persons on the base. The Jesuit Juan de Pineda represents Theology. Juan Martinez Montañes represents Sculpture. Miguel Cid represents Poetry. Finally Bartolome Esteban Murillo represents Painting. The top of the monument has an image that represents the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception.
